Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a great choice for many people and are more popular than ever! Children can often successfully manage contact lens usage by 12 years of age. Contact lenses are regulated by the Food & Drug Administration and there is risk that goes along with their wear, but that being said, contact lenses do offer a few advantages over glasses. Contacts sit directly on your eye, so vision, particularly peripheral vision, is unobstructed. You can participate in sports and outdoor activities without fear of eyeglasses getting in the way, falling off, fogging up or breaking. Because contact lenses sit directly on the surface of the eye, they do reduce the amount of oxygen reaching the front surface of the eye which can have complications if contacts are worn for longer periods of time than prescribed. For that reason, EVERY contact lens wearer must have backup glasses available so the eyes can have a break from CL wear. Talk to your doctor about your lifestyle and whether contact lenses might be a good addition to your vision correction options.
